Play with city names
Bayonne in New Jersey... Lyon in Mississippi... Southern cities have homonyms around the world. Montpelier, with a single L, is the capital of Vermont, a green state in the United States that borders Quebec. If I'm talking about her today, it's because I love her Capitol (each US state has its own). Quite at the top of the dome stands a female statue. No, it's not a replica of the Statue of Liberty, it's the statue of Pomone himself.
Who's that? A nymph of great beauty that has always rejected the advances of the gods. Divity of fruit trees, she had thought only for well maintained orchards.
In 2009, between Montreal and Boston, I stopped at the foot of the statue of Pomone, a land of agriculture and farmers.

Loves
Léonie had intimate relations with Félicien, a worker of her grandfather, with whom she stayed and where the young man was also housed. They were young and there were cuckoos in the eye, what had to happen, Léonie soon found herself pregnant with the works of Félicien. When Félicien was aware of her future fatherhood, she had no intention of assuming her responsibilities and began to abandon Léonie despite all the attempts she made to bring him back to her.
She dared to confess her fault to her entourage and thought that the best way to wash her honour would be to wait for the life of her lover, who, after having seduced her, left her in a very unenviable situation. She stole the old gun from her grandfather, loaded it with lead and powder which she found in a trunk, also dressed with the clothes of one of her brothers and thus came accustomed, on Saturday 21 November 1868 at 8 o'clock in the evening, in Gigondas, waiting for the wrongdoer.
When he appeared, she dumped his weapon on him at close range, as he went down the stairs of his uncle's house to go to a friend with whom he intended to hunt the next day. Felician was killed instantly. Léonie then fled, hiding his weapon under his blouse, and managed to return to his grandfather's home in the utmost discretion: his absence had not been noticed.
The justice of the peace in the canton of Beaumes-de-Venise immediately went to Gigondas with the ground floor. On the morning of the 22nd, Léonie, suspected, was taken to Gigondas where she made a full confession before the imperial prosecutor. She was immediately taken to Orange's prison. What happened later? History doesn't say...

The young man whom I am talking about today is Passadocian only because he lives in Monaco at the moment when his adventure begins, in fact he is born in Burgundy and disappears somewhere in the North Atlantic off Newfoundland one night in April 1912.
Let the purists forgive me but I found his tragic story interesting and I want to share it with you.

The seat of Avignon
Louis VIII of France took the cross from the pope's new legate, who convinced him to leave the succession war with the English to take care of the Albige crusade. He gathered in Bourges all his lords who owed him a war service and descended the Rhône valley. On the road, the consuls or representatives of the towns and villages come to take the oath and hand over the fortresses and hostages to him. Avignon... the city takes oath but refuses that all the army will cross the city allowing the passage only for the king and a small escort. Being « excommunicated » For a long time, the Avignonnais feared abuses. In reaction, King Louis VIII of France assiège Avignon, destroyed its ramparts and three hundred houses, then filled its ditches. He then built a fort in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon where he installed a garrison. During this siege the representatives of the inhabitants of Montpeslier will present to the king a letter of recommendation from Pope Honorius III. This letter recommends to the king to spare Montpeslier who is a « earth of blessed abundance of God » and that « its inhabitants and consuls are delicious » . This letter has so much effect on the king that he has safeguard letters written « freeing the people of Montpeslier from all tolls on the lands of the king and his friends ». Montpeslier will therefore be preserved from the second crusade against the Albigois thanks to this letter of recommendation of the Pope...
Louis VIII of France died of dysentery on returning to Paris. His doctors diagnose too long a sexual abstinence during the siege of Avignon! Sacre of his son Louis IX (12 years old) and regency of Blanche de Castille his mother. Jaume is 18 years old, he must again face a revolt of the Aragonese nobles led by his uncle. « Infant » Ferdinand. General lift in Aragon! Jaume and Alienor are detained in Zaragoza's Zuda. The pope comes to his aid through the Archbishop of Tortosa who calms the situation by restoring the authority of Jaume.
Change of Pope: death of Honorius III and election of Gregory IX. The Treaty of Paris ended the Albige crusade.

Inquisition
Pope Gregory IX excuses the Franciscans from following the too strict regulation of Saint Francis of Assises already softened by the author! On the contrary, a current wishing to return to the precepts of absolute poverty of the saint (spirituals) is formed in Languedoc and will soon be qualified as heresy and subject to the Inquisition.
Pope Gregory IX established the tribunal of inquisition, which would be provided by the beggars, Franciscans and Dominicans.
Jaume signs acts and laws in Montpeslier favouring trade, including authorization to trade with merchants « Sarrazins ». The Ben Labi of the Caballeria and the Ravaya, Jews Sefarads, are the king's bankers, they finance conquests and are entrusted by the sovereign with governmental charges.
First Bull of the Pope on witchcraft (« Vox in Rama » describes the Sabbath rituals!). New Bull of the Pope establishing the priority courts of inquisition over the courts of the bishoprics and seigneuries. Installation of fixed inquisition courts in Toulouse and Carcassonne. Construction of four new ovens in Montpeslier to feed the growing population.
Jaume at 26 years old, he came to Montpeslier to settle the troubles which had caused in the city the names Gerraud de la Barce, Pierre Boniface (a notable powerful) and Bernard Regordan close to the former lords Guilhem, and probably the former party of Agnes. They promise before Jaume that they will no longer cause trouble in the city. The future will prove the opposite...
For 10 years the Inquisition Courts have judged the « Heretics » in Languedoc. The repressions were particularly violent in Carcassonne where « Ferry » nicknamed « the hammer of heretics » carried out many massacres. Raymond VII of Toulouse managed to raise the inquisition on his lands the first. Finally the end of heresy is declared in Montpeslier, the court of inquisition is abolished ten years after its establishment. During this period, Jaume usually took part in the consulate to fight against the influence of Bishop John of Monlaur II, but could not oppose the inquisition. The miraculous status of Notre-Dame-des-Tables, however, allows for some indulgences in the « Heretics » who repent.
Montpeslieran courts are lifted but the inquisition is now in place and it operates throughout Western Europe. Pope Innocent IV promulgates a bubble in which the use of the question (torture) is allowed (Ad Extirpanda). The following Popes will renew this use. Assassination of 4 inquisitors near Toulouse in Avignon. The Talmud is burned in public place in Paris.
Jaume is 35. Birth of Jaume II in Montpeslier, the day before Pentecost. The son of Jaume 1st, future king of Aragon and Majorca, is adopted as a child of the city by the inhabitants as his father had been...

Lou peilharot!
Lou peilharot... peilharot. He was screaming in the street, and when the kids weren't wise, they said:
– The peilharot will take you!
Every time he screamed, there was no child on the street anymore, and I remember, I was under the table. In Montpellier, the peilharot was Mathieu the gypsy.

Lou Peilharot de Montpellierdrawn by Marsal (1896)) published in 1896 in the collection of 50 illustrations of Montpellier's old professions,
entitled « Din las Carrieiras dau Claupas ».
In the imagination passed on to us by the ancients, the peilharot was this man with a dirty look, always dressed in dark clothes, with a rather unattractive look, who shouted to the head in the streets of Montpellier and Languedoc villages, « Peilharot, Peilharot ».
He carried on his back a bag of jute canvas filled with rabbit skins bought at a vile price from housewives, or used fabrics... But he was above all a dangerous man to whom the mother of the family, exasperated by her too stirring offspring, promised to deliver her unwise children. Thus, as he approached, the children fled, hid and sometimes even went to bury themselves under the base of their beds, hoping to escape him.
I had to be one of the last generations promised to peilharot, even though when I was a child, there was already more... He did not, however, exert a threatening terror... I also remember, coming back from a little too adventurous walks, when the ears had slipped into the mesh of my sweaters, or my pants were tumbled, they called me peilharot, before forcing me to remove all my clothes and go to the civilization of people. « appropriate »... A whole fantasy now gone... The coming arrival of the peilharot would no longer scare our younger generations, they would even have fun!!! Only the temporary disappearance of their modern communication tools would certainly be able to cause the anxiety we felt when his name was pronounced...

There was the same... Up there... In the North!
As a child, I spent a whole year with one of my aunts... A small Parisian suburban pavilion and a garden in which a pear tree, an apricot tree, grew a few rows of salads, tomato feet and some other vegetables... It seemed immense to me!
Also lived two bitches, a pussy, chickens, rabbits... And all that made little ones enchanting my whole, very early childhood. Heaven for a little girl in the big city!
Every once in a while, a rabbit ended her life... Quickly occis without suffering, he was hanged by a back leg at the barn door and savourily stripped, quickly undressed!
Fur inside, stuffed with straw, the skin dried in the air while waiting for the man who – shaking a bell – warned of his passage by a sound :
- Rabbit skin! Skin!
… which he repeated all along his way, pulling a small cart where the "bunny skins, skins!" bought three times nothing... A few francs of the time.
But that peilharot didn't scare me!

Murviel-lès-Montpellier... the remains of the ancient Forum
16 April, on the town of Murviel-les-Montpellier, at the place called Castellas, under a welcome sun, took place the inauguration of the cover of the remains of the north wing of the ancient forum.
Known since the 16the century, assiduously searched since the 19the This forum with its mosaics was always exposed to the four winds, subject to the weather. Now that the excavation sites make it possible to read its importance and tell the story – what Mr. Tollard did very well – it was high time to protect it, to ensure that the testimonies of this archaeological wealth could be passed on to our successors. That's it!
And superbly made with this particular elegant structure, composed of canvases stretched between metal elements, due to the cabinet Covalence Architectes. Everything forms a subtle balance to protect this forum and discover it, [...] this site benefits from this protection because « ruins are not meant to be nothing but ruins. They have a lot to tell us.« , as reminded us Michaël Delafosse. A great congratulations for this new equipment that reflects the cultural and heritage vocation of our Metropolis. It's a pride for all of us.

A Fréjusian hero of the Resistance...
April 21, ceremony to commemorate the sacrifice ofAlbert Einaudi, on RN7, at the entrance of the Adrets of the Esterel.
Born on 19 August 1911 in Fréjus (Var), this resistor was shot dead on 21 April 1944 in the Adrets (Var). Son of a farmer, Albert Einaudi married Gabrielle Jeaume on 19 December 1936. SNCF employee at Fréjus station, he was responsible for the so-called switch station « Military Stewardship ».
A member of the Combat movement, then of the MUR, a member of the Cotre intelligence network under No. 472, he had organized the teleescoping of two German trains at the Fréjus yard on 30 January 1944. Suspected, he was then questioned by the Gestapo, but, having warned that the signals had not worked, he had been released.
A few days later, Albert Einaudi was denounced, he was arrested by two French militiamen (Marcel Massiach and Julien Viard) and their German leader (Adolph Hoeber) of Draguignan's Sipo-SD on 21 April 1944, at the beginning of the afternoon, at his place of work.
These agents reported driving Albert to Nice for questioning. But his body sifted with bullets and atrociously mutilated was found on 24 April at the edge of the RN7 in the direction of the village of Adrets by a shepherd. When the area was liberated, his assassins were identified and sentenced to death by the Draguignan Military Court of Justice. They were shot on October 5, 1944.
A stele was erected after the Liberation on the scene of the tragedy and, by decision of the Fréjus City Council of 17 January 1965, its name and that of two other resistance fighters who died during the war were given to streets in the town. Albert Einaudi was awarded the Resistance Medal posthumously. He obtained the title of « Death for France ».

African military contingents in Fréjus
Beginning in the summer of 1915, the first African contingents settled in Fréjus, in camps arranged for the occasion. The idea of this installation came back to General Gallieni (Fréjusien since his marriage), then military governor of Paris and then minister of war from October 1915. It is estimated that 50,000 soldiers will be placed between the Esterel massif and the lower Argens valley, between the seafront of the Sables district of Fréjus-Plage and the Bagnols-en-Forêt basin.
From 1916, to the African and Indo-Chinese troops came to add the Somalis that were installed in Roquebrune-sur-Argens. The stay in the camps is used to improve the training of the units.
Manoeuvring grounds and ranges are created for military training and literacy classes. The wounded are treated and then recovered in four hospitals built for the occasion in Fréjus, other hospitals and convalescent homes are installed throughout the Côte d'Azur, large hotels are requisitioned for this purpose. Cemeteries collect the bodies of those who could not survive. Places of worship are built by African and Indochinese soldiers to allow everyone to practice their religion: the mosque « Missiri » and the Indochinese pagoda (Buddhic temple) « Hong Hien » remain. A War Memorial in Indochina was created in Fréjus in 1993. Its necropolis collects the remains of 17,255 identified soldiers and 3,152 unknown soldiers, all killed during the Indochina wars between 1940 and 1954.
