Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, the village and its Abbey

« […] In 804, when the abbey was founded, Guilhem had deposited there a fragment of the True Cross, which was allegedly offered to him by his cousin Charlemagne. This relic as well as the tomb of the late Guilhem (ravaged by a flood in 1827) quickly became in the heart of a true cult. The abbey quickly established itself as a must-see stage on the way to Arles in Santiago de Compostela.

Today, the village presents itself in the form of a remarkable ribbon of beautiful stone houses stretching along the ravine, on the left bank of the river. For those who will have the opportunity to pass by, we will get out of the long main street around which the whole village takes place to get lost in the callades and other pretty flowery alleys full of hidden beauties. It also includes the many cardabelles adorning the doors of the houses: a magnificent thistle from the neighbouring causses and supposed to play a role of good luck for its inhabitants.«

Aude

Hello, Passadoc friends! In the spring of 2021, I decided to follow as close as possible the 220 km of the Aude River from the spring to the mouth. On foot in the mountainous part, by bike diving into the valley, then canoeing for the last 170 km, fromAxat to the sea.
This 10-day experiment allowed the river to be rediscovered in a new way.

The tricolor flag...

On 24 October 1790, the tricolor flag was officially adopted. This makes it one of the oldest flags in the world.
Article 2 of the Constitution of Ve Republic states that the tricolor flag must float on all buildings. This standard comes from the French Revolution.

Since Henry IV, white is the symbol of the French monarchy, of royalty. Blue and red are the historical colours of Paris.
During the Revolution, a militia was born in the capital. To identify, the limbs wear two-coloured, blue and red cocards. These colors emerge naturally to represent the nation. In blue and red, the Marquis de La Fayette requires the addition of white.

On 24 October 1790, the Constituent Assembly officially decreed that the flag would be tricolor, just like that of France. At the same time, this assembly lays the foundation for a new society.
The use of this banner is confirmed by the law of 15 February 1794 which changes the order of colours and specifies: « Blue to mast, white to center and red to end »This provision is derived from the recommendations made by the painter David.

But the flag is not unanimous. When King Louis Philippe was overthrown, the revolutionaries demanded a flag only red, a symbol of insubmission. However, Lamartine imposed the preservation of the tricolor flag, which he considered more pacifist, less revolutionary.

This flag of the French Republic remains the only national emblem, since Marianne or the cock is not considered to be such.

« Freedom guiding the people«

Painted by Delacroix [1798-1863], the painting is today at the Louvre Museum.
(oil on canvas: 260 x 320).

1830: Charles X wants to restore a stronger monarchy. He issued several orders calling into question the achievements of 1789, including freedom of the press and the electoral law. In Paris, it's revolution again! It will last three long days: the 27 – 28 – 29 July that will remain in history as The Three Glorious.

The picture: the scene would take place on the second day of the riot without the precise location of the place; The only certainty is in Paris: in the distance, we distinguish the towers of Notre-Dame.
The « freedom » carrying rifle is accompanied by a street child, symbolizing all the kids who fought on the barricades. It is said that thirty years later he inspired Victor Hugo for his Gavroche in « The Miserable« .

Branding the tricolor flag, it moves bare feet... and bare breast! This caused many good-thinkers who saw there only a vulgar, filthy woman forgetting the allegory desired by Delacroix and his reference to the Greek statues.

Air views..

Air clichés that I made some emblematic places of the Disembarkation of Provence. They concern the sectors of the « Camel Force » (36th DI US – Sector Fréjus/St-Raphaël Antheor, Le Dramont, Fréjus-Plage), the « Rosie Force » (Naval group of Corsican Assaut – Pointe Isquillon to Théoule sur Mer) and the « Rugby Force » (1st Airborne Task Force Sector La Motte and Le Muy).

François Abbe

The neighbours of the Mayol square in Roquebrune-sur-Argens

Nadine Berenguier
I knew this neighborhood well because I came to see my grandparents, François and Celeste Abbe, every weekend. I played with the little neighbors, girls of the Avois, especially Ariane, if my memories are good. In the 1960s, the place was not forbidden to cars, and my father's 2 CV van was often parked there. It was from their house that I left for Mass, a few steps from the plot, with money for the quest, some of which was then used to buy candy from Miss Rose.

Jeanne Monin
The plot... I don't know her but looking at André's photos, listening to François tell, it seems to me to hear him live...
Ordinary day... and little by little, the plot wakes up...
Clap, clap... the shutters open; in a few hours, they will be tumbled to shelter the already warm sun.
Here are the children who go to school:
- Read it! Wait for me!
Passers-by stop under the maple...
Hello, Mrs. Mireille! Have you heard from your grandson from Paris?
– Well, I hope so. He has a lot of work, you know!

Mrs. Mireille smiles... a little sad. Actually, it's been weeks since he wrote, too many weeks. Every day, she looks for the mailman... tomorrow, maybe...
The clock of the church bleeds the hours... noon... five hours... here are the little school children... soon in the evening... the chairs are pulled in front of the houses to chat a little between neighbours, in the almost freshness of this end of the day.

Clap, clap... the shutters are closing... the slot...

Who has a tasteful memory of his childhood?

Me, it's Gérard Marquet's fresh bread with eggs on the plate. Addictive! I found a bread very close to a baker by chance. Dingus!
The Marquet family was one of the four families of the Mayol plot.
In 1995, André Abbe photograph this space, its bench, its tree. Left at the corner, the Marquet bakery. In the back, the church. In front of the right, the Abbe house with the current artist's workshop the Oubradou of the madness.

Philippe Puzols
I remember Marquet's bread, pastries and ice cream... Not far from our big onesParents.

Isabelle Puzols
I remember their ice cream and the noise of the curtain. « with wooden balls »...

Lene Wissing (who lives in Copenhagen)
Ah! neighbor's cakes – the shop « Milk jam – Pastry » – we're still missing!

Jeanne Monin
A memory? The one for lost bread... It was the unexpected cake, the surprise...
But I wonder if the first surprise wasn't the one to discover my father activated at the stoves! He never touched the pots but – magician for a moment – It was always he who turned hard bread into dessert.

Briand, a pure breed of briard... Almost!

André Abbe
I accompanied Julien Raynaud in transhumance between 1975 and 1989, his last. There has never been a question of « paws » for him*. Indeed, the provençal shepherds appealed to the patous because of the presence of the wolves who arrived at us in 1992.
Julien was always accompanied by two dogs during transhumance. One was better on the road, the other was better in the summer in the mountains. Briand and Pétinou were the best known. Pétinou was a pure bastard, Briand was a briard (almost) of pure race.
In 1984, during the passage of Mount Mounier, he had not left François in a sole, wanting to ensure his protection.

* See « Passadoc Gazette » - No 91 The cabin of the Adrech.

It is not very hot near Mont Mounier, which peaks at 2817 meters above sea level.
So François appreciates his favorite sweater! [
