The first bagne in France - Toulon 1748...
The origin of the word « bagne » comes from Italian bagno, named after a former slave prison in Rome.
At that time, Louis XV ordered that the penalty of the galleys be replaced by that of the irons. Thus began the construction of the first bay in Toulon which was so far the port of the galerians.
Opened in 1748, the year it replaced the galleys, it could accommodate more than 4,000 prisoners; It operated until 1873. It was the largest institution of this type and the one that remained the longest in operation.
The bagards were dressed in a uniform consisting of a red shirt and yellow pants. All also wore a hat: red for those convicted on time, green for those for life. Chained two by two, they slept glued together, in huge rooms of four hundred places.
According to their conduct, the work they had to do was called the « High fatigue » or « small fatigue ». The first was to work on the construction of the harbour's works, which were haraam and perilous. The second was in the shelter, in the hospital, in the kitchens, even for those who could read and write, in the bagne's offices.
Discipline was ruthless. In case of murder of another detainee or beating of a guard, it was the death penalty. Cachot or batonnade were applied for less serious errors.
More than 100,000 men passed between these walls. François Vidocq, who after being escaped to become chief of the police, was one of them.

The Tobrucks
All along the Mediterranean coast, and in order to defend themselves from an ally invasion, the Germans built a defensive line called « Sudwall » and whose reinforcement begins at the end of 1943 – early 1944. Composed of obstacles, minefields and barbed wire, blockhouses and concrete casemates, this fortification line will not have the effect expected by the Germans during the Disembarkation of Provence.
Among the edifices, many were the « Tobrucks » ; but what is it about?
The « Tobruks » were small concrete and buried forts, equipped with a heavy machine gun or tank turret. These elements were recovered either on « panzers » Germany has expired, either on former French or Eastern European vehicles.
Today, the remains of some circular openings on which these turrets were installed remain on our coast.

The cabin of the Adrech
... on the commune of Beuil in the Mercantour massif... Our friend Julien Raynaud occupied in the summer of the 1970s and 1980s. It is not far from GR 5 which is very popular with hikers. In 1984 we met this walker who had moved away from the GR to stop and fill her gourd. She sympathised with Julien's fuzzy stories.
Today, for tourists and hikers things get complicated. The presence of the wolves forced the breeders to appeal to patous (the name comes from the occitan shepherd-pastur) charged with defending the herds against the wolves. Alas the paws, these strong dogs from the Pyrenees, push zeal to protect the sheep from humans. Sometimes hikers approaching herds too close get bitten.
Mountain lovers know how to make a detour when you see sheep on the pastures.

I searched a little and found that the paw is the other name of the mountain dog of the Pyrenees, the most frequent shepherd dog in the Occitan; of beautiful size, whiter of hair than the wool of the sheep that he keeps, he has a good big dog head, a sweet look that makes him want to make grattouille petites between his ears!
Nothing to do with the black and fire beauceron at the snout that Colette called « the peasant gentleman ».
And I read that in the lead group « the five best breeds of dogs best suited to the care of herds » – in addition to the two previous ones – we mention the border collie, the shepherd of the Pyrenees and the birch still badly combed! The wind must lift its hairs to see the eyes of this solid but adorable guardian.
The best known of the paws is probably Beautiful who near Sébastien – a ten-year-old kid – delighted hundreds and hundreds of children on TV shows in black and white.
