The family Cabouat
To get to know Paul Cabouat [subject of the quiz], as well as the entire Cabouat family, I invite you, if the heart tells you and you like reading, to read the book of his great-granddaughter, Lucie Tesnière, « Ma'am, you're about to move.« , subtitled « A French family through two world wars.«
Lucie, who had never written anything and was neither a historian nor a journalist, left her work and her daily life to improvise. « Historical detective » and bring his project to an end, which will take him four years.
« It is the discovery of the notebooks written during the First World War by Paul Cabouat, a military doctor, great-grandfather of Lucie, who was at the origin of this story which was originally to be an edition published for the centenary of the Armistice and which expanded as the author's work of memory was conducted. Texts and photos alternate to evoke the war of the hairy and the death of Francis, Paul's younger brother, who fell in Verdun, at the head of his section in which a grandson of Victor Hugo was mobilized.
More moving is the fate of this family in the second conflict. Paul became a doctor of the resistance and then mayor of Nîmes at liberation. Jeannette, Paul's youngest sister, went underground and was deported to Germany. Jean-Pierre, son of Paul, joined Free France and his cousin Biniou, son of Jeannette was arrested by the Gestapo!
But it is the role of John, Paul's younger brother, who questions the most Lucie Tesnière. Prefect, Jean Cabouat committed himself in 1939, fought in 1940, and after the defeat, following the advice of the President of the Senate, Jules Jeanneney, he joined the prefectoral and implemented the policy of the French state ... The more notable and paradoxical situation is that his wife was of Jewish descent. Prefect of Carcassonne and Guéret, this official followed government directives and, as such, played a role in the first raid, while mobilizing his networks to save his arrested parents-in-law. Jean Cabouat helped the Resistance and was appointed prefect of Pas-de-Calais by General de Gaulle in 1944.
It is a real investigative work that Lucie Tesnière carried out impartially, tenacity by diving into the judicial and administrative archives to understand the action of the Prefect Jean Cabouat who was able to manoeuvre in these difficult times to save what could be, and who, along with many others, contributed to the fact that France was, from all the occupied countries, the one that saved the greatest proportion of Israelites during these complex and tragic years.
Magnificent book, which transcends the life of an exemplary family of the French bourgeoisie, and describes from an original angle half a century of our history. Everyone will find some of their roots. Everyone will feel like part of this family. Lucie Tesnière makes the tour de force de captiver, doing a documentary ant work. It offers a richly documented family story that seems true from end to end.
In a simple and journalistic style, we read both Lucie's elaboration of the book, how she recovered the documentary fragments that make up it and the daily life of these members of a family that experienced both wars. »
These faces in the photos eventually got me very close and real. I closed this book with regret... and it happens to think often about this family Cabouat ...
Not a novel, no. A testimony. More like an investigation. And a real saga that devours itself like a polar, in a few days at most. A book of rare emotional power.

The massacre of the Italians of Aigues-Mortes
In Aigues-Mortes (Gard), a series of events lead to the massacre of Italian workers of the Compagnie des Salins du Midi by French villagers and workers. Operation Ferdinand
To lure the Germans to the landing site, various manoeuvres are carried out on the final destination of the Allied maritime convoy. This is Operation Ferdinand, intended to deceive the enemy and disorganise as much as possible the German troops defending the coasts.
First, Admiral K. Hewitt leads the shipping convoy right on Genoa in order to make the Germans believe that the landing will take place in this area. It is only at the last moment, and taking advantage of a sea mist, that he will change course to go to the Var coast. At the same time, 15/08/1944 at 1:55 am, the parachute of 300 mannequins by 5 C-47 Americans is operated on the sector of La Ciotat (13).
Similarly, a diversion by a naval unit off the Italian border is carried out, just as in the area between Nice and Cannes where a few naval shells are fired on specific targets.

BBC coded messages
announcing the start of this huge operation.
Between 1940 and 1945, about 80% of the messages broadcast on London radio were intended for the proper conduct of a military operation. For example, the BBC transmitted this information via coded messages, with a dozen being broadcast daily through the radio channel. On August 14, 1944, they were essentially addressed to the Resistance in Provence.
That day, a few words broadcast on radio waves discreetly announced the landing in Provence. These coded messages included: « Nancy has torticolis », « The hunter is starving » or « Gaby's going to lie in the grass ».
Through these seemingly anodizing messages, the Resistants and the wise civilians all coordinated and positioned themselves to carry out various missions of assistance to the troops that were about to land, and harassment of German soldiers.

August 19, 1944.
German Nazi troops before leaving Carcassonne carried 15 resistant troops to Baudrigue (Roullens). After shooting them, they detonate the bodies on the ammunition depot. We'll only find pieces of corpses.
Among them, Aimé Ramond. Young police officer, born in Montgeard (Haute Garonne), assigned to the Carcassonne police station since 1943. He passed information to the Resistance and fake IDs. He was arrested on 30 July 44 on denunciation and executed on 19 August.
A street in Carcassonne bears his name.

Maurin des Moures
He's the hero of the novel Jean Aicard.
André Abbe : The actress Blanche Bataille is sure to address spectators who follow the steps of « Maurin des Moures ». André Neyton had written dialogues to revive Maurin in the heart of the Massif des Maures, on the commune of Collobrières (Var). Between two scenes, actors and public walked a few minutes to see Maurin escape the gendarmes or « align »1 A lady. A successful show-walk that had filled up spectators at each performance in 2012 and 2013.
1 « Alignment » → André voluntarily francise a Provencal verb that means courting.
