Jeannot
It was one of the last to harvest cork in my village Roquebrune-sur-Argens (Var).
That morning, we got up early to go into the Moorish forest. We started at dawn, uncommon for a pre-ado on vacation! But to believe my smile, I was delighted! Being behind the 4×4 with the dogs... happiness!
Jeannot's specialty? Forest and cork. Jeannot was a passionate. He continued to harvest cork until the age of 80...

August 07, 1944... Roland Bensoussan
At the age of 21, Roland Bensoussan was a Jewish Blackfoot student from Oran, settled in metropolitan France under the false identity of Roland Levernay. He is an active member of the sector's FTP-MOI resistors, and has participated in several attacks, notably against the South Station and a power plant, while sabotaged many German vehicles.
He had been pursued by French police officers after his last terrorist action and had managed to escape with a gun and grenade, wounding two of them on 29 July 1944. But he was caught and captured in Franklin Square by GAPPFs, and handed over to the German police in Nice, and sentenced to death on August 07, 1944 by a German court martial who justified his verdict by the press release Eclairer of Nice:
The individual who has just been executed belonged to the worst kind of terrorists: those who starve the population. In addition to his involvement in armed attacks, he had blown up locomotives at the Southern Railway Station that allowed us to refuel. In addition, he had injured French representatives of the order service. He therefore deliberately exposed himself to the most severe punishment.
Driven to the valley of La Faïssa in Nice, he was shot by a platoon of 8e Grenadiers Regiment at the orders of a blond officer in the worrying facies called Jeep Sisowski.

The maquisards of the Ventoux.
In this region of Provence, about 1,000 guerrillas were placed under the direction of Lieutenant-Colonel Philippe Beyne, former collector of Sault (84) and reserve officer of the famous Red Devils regiment, the 152e Colmar's RI. With his deputy Max Fischer, this officer had organized the Maquis Ventoux in groups, which were the best equipped and best trained in the department of Vaucluse. This was largely sufficient to control the access of the massif in July 1944. In the early days of August, attacks were even launched on formidable German units stationed in the Rhône valley.
A first skirmish led by the 4e Captain Robert Bourcart's company took place on August 5, 1944 on the Sault road. It allowed for the beheading of part of the Nazi command, which left five dead, including four officers.
The biggest attacks by the Resistance in this area were carried out on August 8, 1944.
– The first took place in Montbrun-les-Bains, led by Lucien Grangeon and resulted in dozens of German deaths.
– The second took place again near the Château de Javon, under the leadership of Félix Aubert, grandfather of the MP Julien Aubert. Since the previous day, the FFI intelligence services knew that a German column stationed in Apt was to reach Sault by RN 543, a first skirmish having taken place on 4 August 1944 with a German patrol. On the orders of Colonel Beyne, groups of resistancemen were ambushed two kilometres south of the castle, on a hill overlooking a deep ravine. In addition to grenades, they had 4 machine guns and 16 machine guns at their disposal.
As soon as the column reached range, the attack was triggered, and nailed the head of the convoy. The only reaction to the shots and grenades was that of a truck masked by a bend whose occupants managed to put their machine gun into battery. This final attempt aborted under a grenade jet. Order was then given to pick up.
In 12 minutes, these tens of German soldiers had been put out of combat, considerable equipment destroyed, while the guerrillas could withdraw with all their equipment and only six wounded.
