With Julien... from sock to panouche
Julien Raynaud (1916- 2015), my shepherd friend of Briançonnet (Alpes-Maritimes) had in his musette a bottle of cade oil (a juniper) which was once the universal remedy of shepherds. We'll talk about this famous oil later.
He had also given up wearing socks, which were holed after being worn a day or two, to surround his feet with pieces of old sheets, squares of about 50 cm x 50 cm, "panochas" (panochas or panoucho in Provençal according to the graphic).

Christophe Malherbe : Passadoc is to keep I think (passage, documents, Occitanie). Why don't you take it back? But it can be completed... as suggested above.

The revolt of the cascavèu
It's 1629. Louis XIII reigned over France, while the cardinal of Richelieu, the strong man of the kingdom, held the reins of power.
In that year, Aix suffered a violent plague epidemic; The Aixese are buried in their houses... Thousands of corpses litter the streets and the situation is catastrophic.
The authorities desert the city except the provost Jean-Nicolas de Mimata, the Consul Borilli and Joseph Martelly. They wish to celebrate every first Sunday in September, ...

The Saint Simon…
In my family, I have always heard that Uncle Jules Fabre – born in 1879 in Gonfaron, brother of my maternal great-grandmother – had disappeared in the Mediterranean during the First War during the sinking of the submarine Saint Simon On board which he was a mechanic. With no other information it was difficult to find out more. Then the Internet came...
A few years later, the web offer was sufficiently extensive to allow for further research. So I'm looking for information about this submarine. Saint Simon, Without believing too much in truth. There were millions of deaths in this conflict, finding information about my uncle was a challenge...
And yet...
Not finding any submarine of this name, I expanded my search and one day Google offers me a site on the island of Ouessant in Brittany: a certain Louis Ticos appears on the monument to the dead for having disappeared on the steam Saint Simon...
Here! The Saint Simon Would he be a surface ship?
In short, by searching I end up finding this site where indeed my uncle Jules Fabre and Louis Ticos are on the list of the missing... Cherry on the cake I even know the registration of the German submarine and the name of its commander... Like with the Internet anything is possible if you bother looking, but not that....
At the time I was often in Paris for my work and I went to the Château de Vincennes, which holds all the French military archives available to the public. With the above information, it was easy to find my uncle's military record.
The photo of Tonton Jules and his decorations (Legion of Honour and Cross of War with Palms and Bronze Star) delivered posthumously are family archives that I recovered...

1944... Four resistors from the Brignoles – Var sector
From the beginning of the landing in Normandy, the Var resistances organized, or had been informed wrongly, that a landing in Provence should occur simultaneously.
Very quickly, it appears that this is a false alarm. In Vins-sur-Caramy (Var), the weapons from parachuting in the area came out of their cache to be distributed and reintegrated into the cave of Vins, to be left in the custody of Dominique Logiacco and Sylvain Jean-Baptiste.
But the Germans and French collaborators know the existence of these parachuting weapons, especially since one of them was mistakenly made in the centre of Brignoles. Searches and reprisals in the area continue. Fearing that the cache would be discovered, the resistors decided to empty the cave of Vins, and moved the weapons in the mines of Grâvere to Cabasse (Var), then in the one of Engarden to La Celle (Var) and finally to La Baume Nord, Mazaugues (Var). Later, these weapons will equip local resistant and maquis for their fight leading to the liberations of the area during the landing of Provence.
Tracing resistance and guerrillas and searching for weapons caches, the Germans managed to get hold of four members of the S.A.P. de Brignoles: Jean Mozzone, his two sons Eugene and Louis, and Théodore Linari; They were arrested on 27 July 1944. Therefore, the four unfortunate are subjected to a very long and painful interrogation.
On July 29, 1944, all four were taken to the wine cave. Despite threats and torture, all refuse to indicate where the weapons that were supposed to be there were transported. The four brave men are shot on the spot.

The raid on Sisteron's citadel
Return to the martyrdom of the maquis de Tramalou in Bayons (Ipes-de-Haute-Proence) during the Second World War.
This is the testimony of Marcel Put, former of this maquis, having escaped the massacre, .
« Our leaders were courageous and determined men, but without rigorous and tactical military training, unprepared for frontal combat. The only real assets of the maquis were to create insecurity of German movements by surprise attack, with choice of terrain and mobility. Following the attack on the citadel of Sisteron on 21 July 1944, our leaders knew very well that we were in danger of German reprisals, to recover the eleven prisoners we held.
The retreat of the maquis towards the commune of Seyne-les-Alpes was implemented and a first departure took place on 25 July with comrades, the most vulnerable, liberated from the citadel. Due to lack of vehicles, the bulk of the maquis was still on site.
Meanwhile, with the intermediary of civilian personalities in Sisteron, negotiations were under way for the exchange of hostages among the Sisteron population. The Maquis took advantage of these talks and sought to move. But unfortunately the German troops, despite the talks, on the night of the 25th, were moving to the offensive, attacked the maquis by surprise, eliminating him any possibility of moving.
So it was at daybreak on July 26 that the first gusts awakened the camp. Only a few comrades who had spent the night at the foot of the mountain were attacked and heroically resisted. Faced with a cruel, better organized, well equipped and trained enemy, we were only novices, in unfortified positions, with small, diverse and disparate weapons, not prepared for this kind of confrontation. Despite our youth, enthusiasm and determination, we could not fight with equal arms, contain the assault and avoid a massacre, the general order of withdrawal was quickly given.
