From Provence to Japan: a wink to women
March 8 is International Women's Law Day. A perfect opportunity to remember famous or still in the shadow. From the first film director to the banks of Provence, to activists and figures from Japan, here are a few fates that deserve to be discussed.
Alice Guy and the Buttes Chaumont studio
Alice Guy (1873-1968): The first woman filmmaker in the world toured the Buttes Chaumont studios in Paris. Today, there are accommodations and a hotel instead. It was moving to stay there last month.
Not a sign of Gaumont's "greatest studio in the world" at the beginning of the century and burned down in 1956, nor of the temple of TV studios demolished in 1996.
The only "log" is that of the building keeper. There's a passage from art 7, no more.
Laugier: a happy life on the farm
Mrs. Laugier, seen in theexhibition "Women of Provence" in Draguignan: my father André Abbe filmed and photographed at his farm in 1991.
Not a day off throughout his career, not a mechanical machine (his husband was the last of the Var to use oxen for agricultural work). Yet her life was happy, explain her family and she during the interview shown to the Evening "Intimate Provence".
Martine Baron, berger in Provence
Martine Baron, also in the exhibition and Photo book Women of Provence, also filmed for France TV by André: the hostess leads the exploitation with her husband Bernard Bellini and their two children Nans and Pierrot. American photographer Julian Shelton followed them a Day of departure in transhumance in 2024. So we have a "before/after" with the photos of André.
Two unknowns in Japan
In 1980, André immerged with two families in Japan.
In April 2025, we returned to Japan to find these two families.
Julian Shelton will make a "before/after" picture... 45 years later! Ai lived in Omiya (north of Tokyo), Nobuyuki lived in Tairah (near Nagano).

Francine Remy, a life of fighting
Francine is an illustrious unknown (my mother!) who fought for the right of women to abortion, then for the right to another education (Freinet) and the right to defend nature (Vosges).
This photo of the Bamiyan buddas is exceptional because they were destroyed in 2001.
The list is long of talent
The list is too long to mention all our talents. One last thought for Florence Brissard, met at Mikros Image, also gone too soon...
And for you: who will add to the list? Who scored you?
PS: Call for help = we need advice on Japan to find these two families. A bottle at the sea? We're counting on you!
