Provence: The neighbours of the Mayol square in Roquebrune on Argens

Who remembers the neighbors of her childhood? Visit the village of Roquebrune sur Argens (Var). On the square there are four families: Avois, Henriot, Marquet and Abbe. We go to meet them... And you'll see, it looks like your childhood.

1980: playing in the vineyards

Andre goes to work in the fields. On that day, he brought François and the neighbour and friend Lise Henriot. André immortalizes a game of hide-and-seek and an improvised photo shoot. André is a photographer. He gave François his old apparatus. It's one more game for Lise and François!

Lise loves going to the baker Gérard Marquet behind his bread oven! Years later, Lise uses another oven... No, it's not edible! It is terracotta, ceramic objects.
Although exiled to the Paris region, his heart remained in his Provençal village. During the summer of 2022, Lise participated in the Roquebrune potter market on Argens.

Mayol square is in the heart of the village. On one side, the 16th century ramparts serve as a siege. Then a bench and a tree (a maple tree) appeared. It used to be an abalone.

East side, it's the Henriot house. The large living room opens onto the square. A large wooden table welcomes friends. It's a place of celebration! Their daughter Lise goes to school right down the village. My father André followed the same streets. Among them, rue de la Fromagerie is my favorite. It is beautifully flowered. We barely walk there because it's so narrow.

To the south is the Marquet bakery. Florence does the service with her mother. Florence knows the village and its inhabitants well. She has a chat and a smile. Every night his father Gérard Marquet weighs one by one the pâtons of the future wands. The balance emits a «beep» each weighing. It's the only noise in the neighborhood! Feasters come to buy their pastries at night. Today the house is called « The flour mill ». A memory of the time when Gérard mounted the 50 kg bags of flour on his back, from the outside, on a milling scale. Since then, the room has become the room of Florence and Yves. She turned the bakery into a snack. «Flo» and his companion Yves serve the dish of the day. Every Friday, it's aaïoli. Today, the Roquebrunoise Fadoua holds the snack. New face, new smile!

To the north there are two entrances. To the left lives the Avois family and their three daughters Ariane, Marie-Pierre and Sabine. Father Jeannot was born in 1920. He inherits his sister Léontine's house. The family left home in 1979. The entrance to the right is the Abbe house. On the ground floor live the grandparents Céleste and François. Upstairs is André and his son François (me!).

André Abbe says:

« Lise works in Paris for a large weekly but her vocation leads her elsewhere. To Roquebrune (Var) its native village which is not far from Vallauris, capital of pottery and Grasse, capital of perfumery.

No wonder Lise chose to marry pottery and perfumery by giving perfume to some of her pieces: she made some Essential oil diffusers. They help fund the next photo exhibition of the 2023 Heritage Days!

Some pottery from Lise are visible on your screens but no perfume will come out (find out Read on Insta). »
