Provence forgotten...
At the gala party « the Victories of Classical Music » – on France 3, 9 March – the incomparable Stéphane Bern spoke about the region « Alpes-Côte d'Azur » forgetting « Provence » By the way.
This happened in Aix-en-Provence in the Grand Theatre of Provence. It had to please the people of Gap and Nice whose most radical did not want our region to bear the name of Provence and preferred the one of PACA, a ball that we are today dragging with that of « South ».
South of which, I wonder. We know where the French Riviera ends, on the Italian border between Menton and Vintimille, but no one knows where it starts. Some say that it begins in Hyères where the name was invented, others in Saint-Tropez, others in Saint-Raphaël and others finally at the edge of the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes.
Neither Pacanian nor Azurean, I will remain Provençal in a commune of which it is unknown if it is on the French Riviera..

78 years ago, in the village of Puget-Théniers...
The village of Puget-Théniers was one of the strongholds of the Resistance with the presence in this area of a team of the SOE Buckmaster network and the ORA maquis of the François Group among others, structures composed of a high proportion of refractories to the STO.
On 14 March 1944, there was an important parachute of materials for resistance, on the plateau of Dina in the Alpes Maritimes. As a result, no less than 66 tons of weapons, ammunition, explosives and other materials will be received by local guerrillas.
In response, the German authorities launched fierce repression and ransacks of the village and its surroundings in the weeks and months that followed. The clichés of the time illustrating my point, do not all concern the parachute of the plateau of Dîna, but that carried out on 12 August 1944 in Saint-Jean-de-Beuil.

The calanque of the English
This is why one of the most beautiful calanques on the Var coast between Agay and Antheor is called the English calanque!
The insignia of Vasseau Jean Toussaint Bernard was entrusted with his first command on board, on the cannonhole Air.
In December 1813, as he travelled between Toulon and Genoa in convoy with the schooner The Estafette, and commercial ships, are being hunted by English ships. French ships in the Bay of Agay, the English take action.
While British troops are laid to shore by boats on both sides of the Agay harbour to neutralize coastal forts, a bitter naval battle takes place throughout the night. The Estafette is finally failed, Air Joseph Toussaint Bernard wounded and his crew will spend four and a half months in captivity with the enemy, as evidenced by the service records of his commander.
While Napoleon Iand Commander Bernard has just been deposed and sent to rule the island of Elbe, and is being tried in a maritime war council for the loss of his ship, crew and cargo (4,500 rifles). However, he was acquitted in October 1814.
Since then, the place where some of the English had landed in a boat that night, English Calanque.

Dwarf
This high-perched village extends to the top of a hill behind an immense rock and dominates the entire valley. Saignon is a small peaceful and serene village that you will visit on foot with pleasure. In front of the town hall, you can admire a beautiful 12th century Romanesque church.
Ewalking through its narrow alleys you will discover ancient fountains, small shaded squares on which there are beautiful houses... old doors worked delicately.
