1956... The year the olive trees froze..

1956... cold, snow and frost seemed to have spared southern France; But in February, back on a wave of cold reference: almost 150 people lost their lives. On 2 February, all of France suffered it: −20 °C in Paris and the Seine was completely frozen.

Major snowfalls occurred: 31 centimetres in Antibes... At Saint-Tropez there were congers 1 to 1.5 metres high... All French regions were affected, with about 95% of the rivers and rivers caught by the ice.

On the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, in Sète, there were 5 days where the temperatures remained negative all day with a peak at -12 °C on the morning of 10 February. Throughout Provence, it is estimated that 5 million frozen olive trees had to be cut.

An invaluable treasure...

In Provence, water is an invaluable treasure, probably the most precious good of its inhabitants. Also, not a village without its fountain, magical place becoming meeting place, exchanges, life.
Some pictures of these unique and magical places to convince yourself, if need be, of the importance that the Provençals attach to these small monuments built to the glory of the water.

March 1815, Napoleon landed at Gulf Juan,

... near Antibes, with 900 grenadiers, coming from Elbe Island.

Confessed by the Allies on this poor island of 230 km2, barely populated by 12,000 inhabitants, the former French emperor re-established his health and put his experience at the service of his new subjects by applying to modernise his infrastructures. But he gets tired of it very quickly. His forced abdication was not satisfied with the sovereignty over the island and the title of Emperor which was generously left to him.

He was also upset not to receive the £2 million pension promised by his successor Louis XVIII and regretted the absence of his wife Marie-Louise and son. He also has rumours of his possible transfer to a much more hostile island, St. Helena!

Informed of the latent discontent among the French peasants and especially the military, kept aside by the new king who returned to Paris in the vans of the Allies, Napoleon convinced himself that the French were waiting for his return. He decides to run. He took advantage of the fact that English commander Campbell in charge of supervising the island was in love with a Florentine and frequently visited the continent. With one of these trips to Livorno, Napoleon requisitioned all the ships of Portoferraio, capital of the island, and left it on 26 February 1815 aboard the brig. Inconstant, accompanied by six other boats.

Escaped from the English, the fleet won by surprise Gulf-Juan. Avoiding Provence and the Rhone Valley, which the previous year had been hostile to him during his transfer to the island of Elbe, Napoleon took the Alpine route. He received the rally of the 5the in Laffrey, south of Grenoble, then in Auxerre, that of Marshal Ney. Thus, he went up to Paris and made a triumphal entrance to the Palais des Tuileries on 20 March 1815, from where the king fled no later than the day before.

This outfit started in Gulf-Juan will last barely more than three months before ending in Waterloo with a definitive military defeat on 18 June 1815. These Cent-Days will lead to a second Treaty of Paris, much harder than the previous one for France...

Marcel Pagnol

127 years ago – February 28, 1895 – was born in Aubagne the most emblematic ambassador of our beautiful Provence, I am talking about Marcel Pagnol...
In the three volumes that make up his autobiography (My father's Glory, My mother's Castle, The Time of Secrets), he tells about his childhood and his adolescence in Provence.

This son of a public school teacher studied at the Lycée Thiers in Marseilles, then obtained his English degree and became a professor in Aix-en-Provence. He then taught in Paris at Condorcet High School.

He discovered a passion for dramatic writing at a very young age, and published in 1922 a drama in verse: Ctulle. He also founded the journal Fortunio, ancestor of Southern Papers. After two pieces written in collaboration with Paul Nivoix –Tonton and The Merchants of Glory – who were represented in Paris, Marcel Pagnol achieved success with the first two pieces he composed alone: Jazz (1927), and especially Topaz (1928), one of the most constantly taken from the contemporary repertoire.

The rest of his career was to be divided between theatre and cinema, which would make him the master of the « theatre filmed » thanks in particular to its famous Marseille trilogy: Marius, Fanny and Caesar, written for the scene before it adapted for the screen. In the seventh art, he gave among others: Merlusse, Cigalon, Le Schpountz, La Fille du poupatier, La Belle millière, Manon des sources, as well as several films inspired by the work of another Provençal, Jean Giono : Angel, Regain, The Baker's Woman. It was served by the greatest performers of the time: Louis Jouvet, Raimu, Pierre Fresnay, Fernandel.

A playwright and poet, Marcel Pagnol was able to revive in his work a living Provence, depicting between laughter and emotions, soul and southern morals. His talent, which exceeded borders, had immortalized him before his election to the Academy, at only 47 years old, on 4 April 1946, by 15 votes in the armchair of Maurice Donnay, having held his seat from 1907 to 1945. His reception, on 27 March 1947, by Jérôme Tharaud, was filmed, which was a first in the history of the French Academy. François Mauriac traced from him, in his NotepadsA friendly portrait: Pagnol, the only one without a base. It seems to be slipped into this antechamber of eternity passing through the window, the only one who smells air from outside.
Marcel Pagnol died on 18 April 1974.

World Road #1

Let's go back in time... In the 1950s, the Lot department was chosen by the Movement of World Citizens: a pacifist movement claiming a planet without borders.
71 years later, the Aveyron in turn materializes this road beyond the boundaries of the Lot: the world road starts in Cahors, crosses the Aveyron towards Moscow, New York and New-Delhy...
The first terminal is located in the municipality of the Hospitalet of Larzac; a second in Bouillac « Aveyron gate on the Lot Valley ».
The values conveyed by this incentive to tourism roaming on World Route No. 1 are values of peace, sharing, fraternity, discovery.
Visitors and travellers can take a relaxing break on the Larzac to discover the wonders of this territory and continue their journey to meet the Lot Valley.

The Castle of the Swimming pool

... It is without a doubt the most imaginary castle of Montpellierans.
Located on the territory of the commune of Montpellier, only about three kilometers from Place de la Comédie, on Avenue de Lodève, The Swimming pool has attracted all lusts and passions.

Its long closed doors increased its interest. Georges Frêche (maire) long dreamed of making it a reception space for brand guests. But its owners have always rejected its advances; they succeed generation after generation in this set classified as Historical Monuments since November 9, 1942. For the little story, the Queen of England lived there in 1965 after the great Duchess of Tuscany, sister of Emperor Napoleon in 1814...

This elegant building was built in 1770-1771 by Joseph Philibert de Belleval (on an old farmhouse) who ruled over more than forty hectares. It was through the marriage of Anne de Boulhaco, daughter of Charles de Boulhaco, adviser to the Court of Accounts Aids and Finance, with Georges de Belleval, which took place in 1676, that this domain of Peyssine entered the family of Belleval.

1789 ... France is divided into departments

Citizens, a great reform is preparing for France: we will create departments! declared Emmanuel-Joseph Sieyès to the gallery of the Constituent Assembly in Paris.
A great reform indeed because the administration of France was going to be completely upset.
