The ramparts of the Couvertoirade

They date from XV^e century. This century is exciting for little that we are interested in military architecture because it is the pivotal century between the use of traditional throw-out weapons (arbaletes, arcs) and the use of the first powdered weapons (colluvres, bombers).

Built at the request of the inhabitants, the ramparts were essentially defensive. If you are attentive, you will notice at the base of the ramparts or in the towers several forms of opening: single archery, niche archery, shoaling archery, alleged archery, cannonhole archery.

These vertical slots are of great diversity and allow to defend the village by avoiding blind spots. The powder is beginning to be heard, so a round orifice is needed to point the cannon. Notice these killers in the form of an exclamation point. They are typical of the 15th century. When you come (or return) to La Couvertoirade, do not miss the visit of the ramparts, observe the shooting openings and try to guess the weapons used. Trébuchet, masse, baliste, triple dagger, swordfish without forgetting the inimitable squid, ... You will see that the imagination of men is boundless when it comes to killing one's neighbor.

Operations ordered and carried out by Hitler's troops. This dynamiting of a historic Marseille district came to the conclusion of an unprecedented wave of arrests and deportations of the inhabitants of this district.

In the week of January 22 to 28, 1943, a raid took place in Marseille:

– 400,000 identity checks,

– 5,956 persons arrested

– 3,977 people released almost immediately

– 1,642 people sent to Baumette prison, including 782 Jews sent from the morning of 24 January 1943 to the camp of Compiègne and deported to the extermination camp of Sobibor (Poland). None came back.

On January 23, 1943, the Old Port was surrounded by the Wehrmacht: it was Operation Old Port. A total of 25,000 evacuees include:

– 20,000 sent to Fréjus internment camp (83)

– 5,000 allowed out of the dams.

– 800 persons retained by the screening commission of Fréjus: Jews living in the shopping streets near the street of the Republic, but also 600 « alleged suspects » Deportees to Oranienburg-Sachsenhausen camp.

From 1 February 1943:

– 1,494 buildings are destroyed by dynamite one after another.

– 14 hectares of ruins simmer from the Saint John district to the Rue de la République. Only a few monuments are spared: the Town Hall, the St. Lawrence Church, the customs and Sanitary Consignee buildings, the Cabre Hotel, the Diamantée House.
